There is no single way a voter chooses the candidates the vote for. We all have certain criteria we look for in a candidate that help us compare them and make a decision. I'll even go as far as to say since every citizen is unique, so is the reasoning they use to choose a candidate in an election. Heck, here's some Voter types you'll find out there. Let's try to get you to an "Educated Voter", if not at least a top-tier "Informed Voter".
- We all know a "Drive-By" voter. This is someone who votes because they recognize the name they saw on the billboard every day on their commute. A committed "drive-by" voter will also consider a picture of the candidate and typically vote for the best looking candidate, just like they did for Homecoming King and Queen in high school. Will never be able to tell you the name of the State Governor.
- The "Informed Voter" is the one who, in addition to knowing there is an election this year, they also know when it is and what offices are being voted on. Some may know the Precinct they belong to. They may have visited a political site or two, and often votes for the candidate with the most signs posted, often thinking, "That name is everywhere I go -- they must be a good person". Vastly preferred over the Drive-By voter, the Informed Voter knows who the Governor is along with their US Senators and US Representative.
- The "Educated Voter" is the ideal spot on the Voter Spectrum. In addition to what the Informed Voter knows, Educated Voters are keenly aware of the current issues and where most, if not all candidates stand on those issues. The Educated Voter is aware of what their elected officials have done and what they plan to do, even if it's not what that official says they've done (this happens quite often in politics they say). They know their US Congressional District, State District, and voting Precinct.
- Finally, there is the "Politi-Geek". Although unlikely, there may be one in your family since 30% of American families have one, seldom none, but never more than one. That is the person who can't open their mouth without it being details on house bills, vote counts, and the voting records of every member of Congress. It is really difficult to have a conversation, much less a pleasant conversation, with this type. They know their Voter ID (and probably yours, too).
